Man arrested for fondling woman
A Hammond man was arrested onboard a South Shore train Thursday morning for fondling a sleeping passenger.
Rashad Shabazz, 51, was charged with simple battery. He boarded the Chicago-bound train at East Chicago. While the train was in Illinois, the woman awoke to find Shabazz touching her in an inappropriate manner.
Traffic stop yields arrest on warrant
An East Chicago man was arrested during a traffic stop on Sunday.
NICTD Transit Police stopped the vehicle of Shermaine Tillotson, 25, at the intersection of 152nd Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard. A computer check revealed that Tillotson was wanted on an active East Chicago City Court warrant for driving while suspended.
GARY
Man accused of
assaulting 2 people
A Gary man was arrested Saturday morning near the Miller South Shore Station for assaulting his female companion and battering a South Shore conductor.
David Wise, 34, allegedly battered a woman who was three months pregnant near the U.S. 12 and Lake Street. She attempted to flee Wise and boarded a South Shore train at the station. When the conductor tried to stop Wise from entering the train, Wise assaulted the conductor and ran into the neighborhood. Wise was located nearby and arrested. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries.
HAMMOND
Father, daughter rescued from lake
Lake County marine units rescued a 46-year-old Mokena, Ill., man and his 14-year-old daughter who became separated from their boat Sunday afternoon near the Hammond Marina.
Vernon Abel, 46, and his daughter were in the water about 45 minutes before Lake County Patrolman Martin Butler located the two in 55-degree water about one nautical mile west of the outer breakwall, Lake County public information officer Patti Van Til said.
Two other children remained in the boat, which had drifted another mile from the swimmers.
Abel and his daughter were treated at the scene.
CHICAGO
Pair accused of
disorderly conduct
A 30-year-old man was arrested for disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana Sunday night onboard a South Shore train.
Jason Manning drew officers’ attention for using profanity and being rude to passengers on the train that left Chicago around 11:15 p.m.
When questioned by police, Manning became irate, telling them that he was going to injure himself by slamming his head into the ground and claim that the officers beat him. Manning started slamming his forehead agains a glass window, fell to the flood and yelled “Erin help me, they’re beating me.”
Manning was arrested and transported to Chicago Police Departments 4th District lock-up, where he hurled insults and profanity toward officers.
Erin Mueller was also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. She was loud and disruptive on the train and disobeyed police orders to stop her behavior.
HOBART
Equipment taken from Albanese
Thieves struck the Albanese Candy Factory, 5441 E. U.S. 30, taking several thousand dollars’ worth of equipment about 12:30 a.m. June 1.
Surveillance cameras recorded two suspects stop at a shed behind the factory in a light-colored dump truck that could be a Ford or Dodge, Detective James Gonzales said.
A 15- to 20-foot trailer was attached to the truck.
The thieves loaded a John Deer tractor with a bucket attachment, an Echo back pack blower and weed cutters, Honda brand push mower, a Homelite chain saw, Dewalt power washer and Power Mate generator.
