Police looking for suspect in Saturday shooting death

Gary Police are looking for a man in connection with a deadly shooting at Second Street and Taft Place Saturday afternoon.

Cpl. Gabrielle King, public information officer with the Gary Police Department, said Terrel Smith, 25, of 129 Rutledge St. in Gary, was shot two times around 1:10 p.m. Smith was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake where he died four hours later, she said.

The Lake County Coroner’s office was dispatched to Methodist Hospital North Lake Campus at 4:20 p.m. where Smith was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds, according to a Lake County Coroner’s press release.

The death has been ruled a homicide, the coroner’s office said.

King said police are looking for a clean cut black male wearing a black hoodie with a white T-shirt. The suspect is about 5-foot-11 inches tall.

Chicago teen struck
and killed by train

A 17-year-old Chicago teen died from blunt force trauma Saturday night after being struck by a train at 1051 Indianapolis Blvd., according to the Lake County Coroner’s office.

The Lake County Coroner’s office was dispatched to St. Margaret North in Hammond just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday where they pronounced Jose Perez, 17, of the 9000 block of S. Exchange in Chicago dead from blunt force trauma.

The cause of the death was ruled accidental. The Norfolk and Southern Police Department is investigating the accident. A spokesman could not be reached.
