CHESTERTON
Truck stolen from impound lot

A box truck was stolen from an impound lot after an unknown man came asking for it, according to the Chesterton Police Department.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Department ordered the 53-foot white truck impounded from its location in the southbound lanes of Indiana 49 near County Road 700N.

The truck, which did not have an attached trailer, was taken to Joe’s Towing in Chesterton. A few hours after, a man came to the lot asking about the truck. He did not ask or pay for its release, however. When employees didn’t see the man for a while, they went looking and discovered that both he and the truck were missing.

Police determined the truck’s license plate is registered to Norfolk Southern Railroad, although it was unclear if the truck itself belonged to the company.

Woman grabbed gun in fight with boyfriend’s kids

Shawn Higgins, 43, of Griffith, called police to report that she was assaulted by her boyfriend’s 16-year-old daughter and his 20-year-old son, but she was the one charged with misdemeanor battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the family’s Lake Eliza home. Higgins grabbed a shotgun during the incident, although she did not know how to use it and did not fire.

The siblings told police Higgins was the first one to strike during the fight although the brother, John Bielak, admitted hitting her in return and to try to get the gun away from her, according to the police report. Bielak was charged with underage drinking and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. An underage drinking charge is being considered against the 16-year-old and one of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor is being considered against their father, whom police said was in the home, in the 600 block of west County Road 50S, and aware of their drinking.
