A detention and arraignment hearing for the father of former NFL player Eugene Wilson was delayed Tuesday after federal prosecutors told his attorney they planned on asking he be held without bond.

Eugene W. Wilson Sr., of Merrillville, was arrested last week on charges of taking $1.5 million from three people who gave him the money to invest and instead wiring it to his bank accounts in Europe or spending it for himself.

Wilson’s attorney, Jerry Flynn, said during the hearing Tuesday morning that he needed more time to prepare to contest the government’s request for detention. He said after the hearing that he was surprised they didn’t want to release Wilson on bond because he has no prior criminal history and was willing to turn over his passport. Bond can be denied if a judge finds a defendant is either a danger or a flight risk. Flynn, who said he had just met with Wilson that morning, had no other comment on the case.

The hearing is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Eugene Wilson Jr., a Merrillville native, was drafted in 2003 by the New England Patriots and went on to win two Super Bowls with them.
