A federal judge has denied former Gary power broker Jewell Harris Sr.’s request to leave prison for seven days to go see his dying mother-in-law.
Harris filed an emergency petition this week, arguing that his mother-in-law was the only mother he had left alive. He had asked to be allowed to leave Friday and to report back Jan. 27. Harris is serving a 71-month sentence after being convicted of double billing the city of Gary for removing debris from the then-work site of the Gary baseball stadium.
