GARY — West Side Theatre Guild artistic director Mark Spencer is excited about international dance troupe Ailey II performing Feb. 7 as part of the guild’s season of performers.
“It is a great opportunity to bring an American treasure to the community,” Spencer said.
Ailey II started in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble and embodies the late Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training and community programs for all people.
Ailey II is also a spinoff of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Co. created in 1958. Ailey II is comprised of the most promising scholarship students of the Ailey School and offers unique opportunities for young artists to refine their technique while gaining invaluable performing and teaching experiences during their tenure with the company.
“They are truly an inspiration to young people and aspiring young dancers,” Spencer said.
This is the first performance for Ailey II on the West Side stage. The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Co. performed at West Side in 1999.
