East Chicago

Time served in child neglect case

An East Chicago woman received time served and 17 months on probation for neglect of a dependent.

Angeline Marie Franklin, 41, admitted before Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. she was passed out from alcohol and marijuana consumption when one of her 4-year-old twins was found by a concerned neighbor, while the child was riding a Big Wheel in the intersection of 136th and Ivy streets in East Chicago. The girl was wearing shorts and a T-shirt on Feb. 16, 2011 when a neighbor spotted the child unattended. Franklin was unresponsive when police arrived at her home in the 3600 block of Ivy Street.

Under terms of her plea agreement, Franklin must comply with all requirements in her juvenile court proceedings for Children in Need of Services. Franklin spent 22 days in the Lake County Jail.

Defense attorney Teresa Hollandsworth said her client had a baby who was born healthy and free of alcohol or drugs.

Hammond

Six years for battering woman

Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. sentenced a Hammond man to six years in prison for battery.

Henry Lewis Jones Jr., 46, admitted he struck his children’s mother on Sept. 4 while they were at his home in the 1100 block of Morris Street. Jones asked the woman for money, which she refused to give him, and injured the woman’s leg with a car jack, causing a laceration and puncture wound.

Deputy prosecutor Monica Rogina noted Jones’ 29 prior misdemeanor convictions in seeking an aggravated sentence of six years.

Defense attorney Teresa Hollandsworth said many of Jones’ arrests were tied to his alcohol problems and that the victim continues to visit Jones while he has been incarcerated.

The plea agreement called for dismissal of robbery and confinement charges that are punishable by a maximum 20-year sentence.
