GARY — The city and seven local not-for-profit groups are partnering on a campaign to encourage “good deeds.”
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson on Friday announced the campaign, which culminates with a special movie premiere of Tyler Perry’s “Good Deed” on Feb. 25 at the AMC Theater in Hobart.
Entrants are asked to submit videos detailing their deeds and post them on the Good Deed Facebook page through Feb. 20. Two adult and two student winners will receive cash prizes.
“Random acts of kindness happen all the time in the city of Gary,” said Freeman-Wilson. “The Good Deeds Campaign is a great way to get more neighbors involved and to place a spotlight on all of the kind and thoughtful acts that our citizens perform daily.”
Chareice White, corporate director of community relations for Majestic Star Casino and president of the Barden Gary Foundation, came up with the idea. White learned about the “uplifting” theme of Perry’s new movie and shared it with members of the Northern Indiana Chapter of the Links.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to include the other seven groups,” White said.
The partnering organizations include the YWCA of Northwest Indiana, WDS Group, Lake Area United Way, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana, Delta Sigma Theta Inc., Barden Gary Foundation, and the Northern Indiana Chapter of the Links,
The announcement of the winners will take place at the special movie screening at 11 a.m. on Feb. 25.
