An Illinois man is pleading guilty to conspiracy to trafficking more than one kilogram of heroin in a federal drug case that has just been unsealed.
According to a plea agreement filed Monday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond and unsealed with the entire case Thursday, Guillermo Berrum-Martinez, 36, of Des Plaines, Ill., is accepting responsibility from three to 10 kilograms of the drug. He faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison, according to the plea agreement.
Berrum-Martinez was arrested in February 2011 in Lake County along with Leonard Hernandez-Torres, 36, Chicago, on preliminary charges of entering the country illegally. They were officially charged in March with that and the drug charge, although the case remained sealed until now. Both men have been held without bond.
Berrum-Martinez’s change of plea hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. Hernandez-Torres, who has pled not guilty, is scheduled to go on trial April 23.
