Another mobile hot dog vendor gets approval

CROWN POINT — Another mobile hot dog vendor will be setting up shop in the city this summer.

Nickolas Tournis recently received approval from the Board of Works and Public Safety for a vendor’s license that will allow him to set up shop in a commercial parking lot away from the downtown square.

Tournis has a self-contained stainless steel propane fueled hot dog stand he would like to set up at either NAPA Auto Parts at 1133 N. Main St., or Phil & Son Inc., at 871 N. Madison St., which is the corner of Summit and Madison streets.

Tournis said he is in negotiations with the business owners and once a deal is finalized he will locate the hot dog stand at only one location.

“Ideally I like the Summit location,” he said.

Keith Stevens, the city’s chief of staff, said there is nothing to prohibit the business at either site so long as Tournis complies with the terms of the vendor’s license, operates during the approved hours, and remains located on private property.

“The Board will only need to be concerned if he moves from a private lot to the city streets,” Stevens said.

Currently the city has approved vendor’s licenses for two hot dog stands on the downtown square, one on the southeast corner and the second on the northwest corner, and a third in the parking lot area across the street from Centier Bank at East and Joliet streets.
