South Shores Clean Cities to host annual meeting

Achievements in local efforts to reduce our dependence on foreign oil will be celebrated Feb. 14 during the 13th annual meeting for South Shores Clean Cities.

Carl Lisek, executive director for the agency, said the event is a chance for businesses, governments, schools and individuals to learn about some of the latest advancements in the field and what is being done in our back yard to make Northwest Indiana a little more green.

“What we’re trying to do is educate people and make them aware not only of the environmental aspects (of alternative fuel technology), but the business aspects as well,” Lisek said.

Presenters include Mark Stoermann from Fair Oaks Dairy and Kelly Carmichael from NIPSCO. Stoermann will share how the dairy has turned cow manure into transportation energy, how that project has succeeded and how it is being somewhat copied throughout the country.

Lisek said Carmichael will provide an update on some of their environmental endeavors including where the company is in the process of bringing electric car powering stations to the region.

“Five different groups will be recognized for their efforts in reducing Northern Indiana’s dependence in imported oil and helping with air quality in the region,” Lisek said.

Along with the presentations, those attending may visit a variety of booths from vendors, organizations and the state all focusing on alternative energy options.

“It’s a great place for different business leaders to learn about different technologies they can implement in a fleet and there’s a lot of information available for consumers,” Lisek said.

Individuals make up about 20 to 30 percent of the organization’s membership. Membership is not required to attend the annual meeting.

The meeting will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. Lincoln Highway in Hobart. Cost is $20.
