A local fugitive task force is launching a new program for cell phone users to text information on the whereabouts of known fugitives.
The U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force is offering a new option for tipsters to provide information anonymously through technology available through Citizens Observer, which provides the service to several law enforcement agencies.
“This program is an excellent way for the public to help law enforcement by anonymously being our ‘eyes and ears’ in the community,” said Supervisory Inspector Shannon Robinson, who oversees the task force, which has offices in Hammond and South Bend.
Regular text fees may apply based on the individual tipster’s plan. All texts are completely anonymous.
Anyone with information on a known fugitive can text the word “capture” to 847411 (tip411). All texts will be answered immediately.
