A Gary man accused of murdering a Schererville woman on May 19 turned himself into police on Monday.
Stephen Lee Henderson, 25, turned himself into officers at the Lake County Jail, according to family members of victim Jacqueline Gardner. Henderson; Michael A. Craig, 22, of Merrillville; and William Blasingame III, 30, of Harvey, Ill., are facing a murder charge and a second count of murder in the perpetration of a robbery in Lake Superior Court.
According to police, Gardner was fatally shot in the hallway of the Hidden Creek apartment complex, located in the 8000 block of Alpine Lane, as she was returning home from her job around 11:30 p.m. on May 19. Gardner’s boyfriend told police that he heard a struggle in the hallway, and he looked through the peephole where he saw Henderson grab Gardner in a chokehold. She suffered a fatal gunshot wound to her back and her tip money was missing
Gardner’s father, Rick, said he was encouraged by the news that Henderson was in police custody.
“Hopefully, he gets what’s coming to him,” Rick Gardner said. “Obviously, our family is grateful to police for bringing him in.”
