Gary man charged
in fatal shooting

A Gary man is being held on $2 million bond after being charged with firing a gun at the floor and fatally striking a 62-year-old man lying in bed one floor below.

The Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Jamalh Nelson, 32, of the 3900 block of Maryland Street in Gary, on Monday and he was later charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, according to Chicago Police.

On Wednesday, Nelson was ordered held on $2 million bond, according to the Cook County, Ill. Sherriff’s office. He will next appear in court July 23, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Andy Conklin said.

Nelson is accused of killing 62-year-old Dewitt Wright in his Hamilton Park neighborhood home.

Wright was in bed on the first floor of a building about 9:40 p.m. on Nov. 12, 2011, when a bullet fired from a handgun into the floor above him entered his unit and struck him in the shoulder.

Police said Nelson was apparently playing with the gun on the second floor when he fired the shot into the floor that struck Wright.

Wright died April 12 at Loretto Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
