Animal Shelter taking care of horses dumped near Lowell

Updated: August 15, 2012 6:07AM

LOWELL--Four horses are in the care of the Lake County Animal Shelter after they were left to roam near Indiana 2 and State Line Road earlier this week.

Three of the horses were apparently “dropped off” by someone in a white horse trailer. An area farmer told police he saw the three horses being released from the trailer, but could provide no additional information.

A fourth horse, not part of the three from the trailer, is also being cared for by the county shelter.

All four were malnourished and some had injuries requiring medical attention. They are at a local farm and a veterinarian is addressing their problems.

Sheriff John Buncich said the horse owners could have called the shelter instead of letting them loose to fend for themselves.

“We will assist them in finding new homes,” Buncich said.

The phone number for the Lake County Animal Shelter is 769-7016.
