Man accused of molesting girl

A child molesting charge has been filed in Lake Superior Court against a 55-year-old East Chicago man involving a 13-year-old girl.

Eladio Navarro Montanez, of the 4800 block of Grasselli Street, is charged with molesting the girl on March 31 at a relative’s home in East Chicago. The girl told police she was watching TV when Montanez sat on her lap, using his weight to prevent her from standing up, and fondled her.

The charge is punishable by two to eight years.

Suspects sought in thefts from cars

Police are investigating the theft of catalytic converters on Sunday from two different locations.

Ona R. Kirkwood, 44, of Crown Point, said someone removed the catalytic from a 1996 Jeep Cherokee when it was parked in a strip mall at 7201 Taft St. The theft happened between 6 and 6:30 p.m., police said.

Melissa Formas, 56, of Crete, Ill., told police a converter was stolen from her vehicle while it was parked at the Innsbrook Country Club, 6701 Taft St. The theft happened between 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The suspects in both thefts drove a maroon, 1991 Chevy Caprice car.

Ring, computer stolen in burglary

A gold wedding band with two diamonds, a laptop computer and a Bose stereo were taken in a Friday burglary in the 2200 block of W. 64th Avenue.

Police said the burglary happened between 7:35 a.m. and 6:20 p.m. Police said entry was gained by breaking a window.
