Gary police seek hit-and-run driver who killed motorcylist

Updated: July 17, 2012 11:17PM

GARY — A man on a motorcycle was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene without stopping Monday night.

The Lake County Coroner’s office identified the motorcyclist as Ruben Mejia, 33, of the 4000 block on Monroe Street in Glen Park.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said Mejia was northbound on Broadway on his Yamaha motorcycle approaching 43rd Avenue as the traffic light changed from red to green.

As the light changed, a black Buick turned left across the northbound lanes. Mejia collided with the car and died immediately. He was not wearing a helmet, King said.

Patrolman Arron Allen was also stopped at the light next to the black car that made the left turn.

Initial reports on the police radio suggested the black car was an Oldsmobile, but witnesses told police the car was a Buick. Witnesses said the car should have extensive front end damage.

Gary and Lake County police were on the scene of the fatal crash, which occurred about 9:20 p.m. at 43rd Avenue and Broadway in the Glen Park neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the driver of the Buick can call Cpl. Agnes Roberts at 881-1217, or the Police Department’s anonymous tip hot line at 1-866-274-6347.
