County officers make boat rescue

About 7 p.m. while on patrol, Sgt. Lance Kurmis and Officer Frank Dupey received a Mayday distress call from a vessel that was taking on water.

They located the boat, which had a large amount of water flowing into the bilge and was listing to the starboard side, placing it in danger of capsizing, and got its occupants aboard Sheriff’s Department Marine Unit M3. The unit towed the distressed vessel to the East Chicago Marina.

No injuries were reported for the owner of the board and his children,
