Gary man shot dead early Friday

Updated: August 3, 2012 11:46PM

GARY — A resident of Dorie Miller Housing Development was shot just blocks from his home early Friday and died later at the hospital.

Bernard Hamilton, 22, was lying on a sidewalk inside the housing complex at 2:25 a.m. when police and medics arrived at 19th Avenue and Alabama Street.

Hamilton was taken to The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus hospital intensive care unit where he was pronounced dead shortly before 8 a.m.

Investigators learned that Hamilton had apparently been involved in an altercation earlier in the night at a local bar. The disagreement then spilled onto the street, where the victim’s car and another car may have bumped each other, officials said.

Several people were in the area when police arrived and found Hamilton collapsed on the ground, but investigators said they will have to return to the scene to locate witnesses because little information was given at the time.

Hamilton is the unofficial 28th homicide of the year in Gary, surpassing the number of violent deaths for this date last year when the city had recorded 25.

His homicide is the second in two days. Lawrence McIntosh was shot Thursday night outside Rico’s Pizza in Black Oak and died later at the hospital.

Detective Cpl. Edward Gonzalez is investigating the homicide. Anyone with information can call him at 881-4750.
