A Hammond man was killed early Sunday after getting into a dispute with a neighbor, according to officials.
Timothy Brewer Sr., 37, of the 7200 block of McLaughlin Ave., died after being shot in the stomach and chest. The coroner’s office has ruled his death a homicide.
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said that Brewer’s family had a long-standing dispute with a neighbor who lived four houses from them.
“They just had bad blood in the past,” Miller said.
Around 3 a.m. Sunday, Brewer’s son got into an argument with the 20-year-old neighbor. The neighbor and Brewer Sr. then both got their guns and shot at each other, the chief said.
Brewer was shot twice, Miller said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:30 a.m., according to the coroner’s report. The suspect was shot once and taken to Community Hospital in Munster and has been released, Miller said.
Miller said the neighbor has been arrested but charges have not been filed yet. If they are filed, they will likely come Tuesday, he said.
