GARY — The boy who fell from his third-story window last month is in foster care with a 5-year-old child after they both were found home alone Saturday morning.
Police arrested their mother’s boyfriend when he returned home saying he had gone for food because the stove didn’t work, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
A maintenance worker called police after discovering the children in the same third-floor apartment where Kyan Powell was living when he tumbled out the window and landed on the pavement July 17.
The child suffered only minor injuries in that incident and police quickly announced that no arrests or charges would follow. King said the fall was an accident.
But at about 11 a.m. Saturday, Patrolman Lucius Mayes arrived and joined the maintenance man at the apartment.
Tiesha Powell was apparently at work and had left her children in the care of Larry Ward, 25.
Ward was gone at least 20 minutes and claimed he had to leave to purchase food. However, when the maintenance man checked the stove, it was working, King said.
Ward was being held pending charges of child endangerment and neglect of a dependent.
Detective Jennifer Powell is investigating the incident, King said.
