Six arrested at park on Monday night
Complaints from residents about loitering and drug use at a small park at 11th Avenue and Washington Street led to six arrests there Monday night.
Patrolman Donald Briggs of the Crime Suppression Unit was checking the area about 4:40 p.m. and saw several adults sitting at picnic tables drinking alcohol while children played nearby.
As Briggs told the adults they couldn’t drink in the park, he noticed Anthony Green, 25, of 1201 Washington St., drop something under the picnic table where he was sitting.
The dropped package contained three small bags of crack cocaine. Briggs noticed that Green was chewing something and forcibly removed 15 more bags of crack cocaine from his mouth, then arrested Green on pending charges of possession of cocaine.
CSU Lt. Samuel Roberts and Patrolmen Jason Johnson, Jeremy Joseph and Calvin Taylor, with Briggs, arrested: Bobby Coleman, 26, of 100 W. 11th Ave., charged with resisting law enforcement; James Miller, 59, of 1156 Pennsylvania St., arrested on a Gary City Court warrant for battery; Jesse Robinson, 55, of 1064 Jefferson St., arrested on four city warrants for loitering; Carlos Simmons, 27, of 501 Pennsylvania St., for possession of marijuana and Nancy Wamble, 52, for possession of paraphernalia.
Police recovered a crack pipe from Wamble and 4.2 grams of marijuana from Simmons.
