Law and Order Lake County

Hammond

Man charged with battering infant

Neglect and battery charges have been filed in Lake Superior Court against a Hammond man charged with battering an infant.

Kevin Michael Hahney, 22, of the 2800 block of Janet Place, admitted to police he “smacked” the 6-month-old baby’s nude bottom with his hand, leaving a bruise. The child also had bruises on her left cheek and left arm after the baby’s mother left her and her 5-year-old in Hahney’s care.

Hahney said he nibbled too hard and bit the child on her lower left jaw and the baby began to cry. He laid her down and she fell asleep, but when she woke up she began crying again and “sounded like somebody was murdering her,” Hahney told police, according to the probable cause affidavit. He tried to soothe the baby by giving her a bottle and changing her diaper, but admitted he hit her with his hand, then tossed her onto the bed from a distance of about 1 foot, then left her alone for about 10 minutes.

Court records indicate Hahney tried to explain the bruise on the baby’s face by saying she had laid on the remote control.
