Man who damaged home in burglary must help repair it

Updated: October 23, 2012 6:08AM

Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Boswell sentenced a Gary man to probation for burglary, but ordered him to assist in repairing the victim’s rental home and pay her $2,500 in restitution.

De’Arieus Lawan Kindred admitted he and a co-defendant burglarized an unoccupied rental home in the 5300 block of East 13th Avenue and damaged the home by stealing electrical wires, copper fittings and wiring and a heater.

Kindred, 26, told the judge he’d learned some construction skills from a pastor in Merrillville. Boswell said he must assist the homeowner, Arnita Matthews Roberts, by helping repair her home under the supervision of a skilled craftsman that Kindred must convince he should work with him on the project. Matthews Roberts told the judge she has estimates for nearly $10,000 in repairs to the home, including electrical, plumbing and other repairs.

Boswell imposed a 24-month sentence and ordered that 18 months be suspended and served on probation. Kindred had already spent three months in jail – the equivalent of six months with credit for good behavior.

Boswell cautioned Kindred, who is unemployed, that if he doesn’t comply with the terms of his probation, he will go to prison.
