Mini crime spree nets charges

A Midtown man described by his employer as “a good worker when not on drugs” has been charged with two counts of robbery, burglary, attempted burglary, mischief and auto theft in connection with a mini-crime spree that began Aug. 6.

Robert T. Cooper, 37, of 2713 Adams St., allegedly robbed a customer outside SuperValue grocery on W. 25th Avenue Aug. 6, taking the woman’s purse and fleeing in a white van.

On Sept. 13, owners of Citgo Mini Mart at 1900 Harrison Street and J.J. Fish at 2574 Broadway both reported discovering extensive damage to their buildings. Surveillance tape at both sites shows a white van backing up into the buildings several times. Damage at the food mart was estimated at $13,500 and at the restaurant at least $18,000, the probable cause affidavit states.

The suspect’s grandfather said Cooper grabbed his wallet from his pocket and stole $300, pushing the man to the floor before leaving the house.

Cooper worked at a Merrillville business and took the company van without the owner’s permission.
