Family friend took benefits card

A family friend has been charged with stealing Dania Dixon’s EBT card and spending most of the $526 balance.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Vanessa L. Lewis, 49, of 4545 Pierce St., charged with forgery and theft.

Dixon told Detective JerVean Gates that while she was visiting her grandmother, Lewis and her mother arrived.

Later she discovered her Electronic Benefits Card was missing from her purse. She learned the card was used at a gas station at 53rd Avenue and Broadway, where she saw surveillance video showing Lewis making purchases.

The card was also used at Georgia Foods, Family Food and PayLow, the probable cause affidavit states.

Dixon said she asked Lewis about the card and Lewis claimed she found it with the access code written on a piece of paper. Dixon said her name is imprinted on the card and Lewis’ grandmother was the only other person who knew her personal code.

SCHERERVILLE

St. John man charged with cocaine dealing

A St. John man has been charged with two felonies for dealing cocaine.

Daniel Kissane, 29, of the 8600 block of Ventura Boulevard, was charged with two counts of dealing in cocaine for selling it to an undercover officer in August and September, said Schererville Patrol Supervisor Cpl. Tim Arvanitis in a release.

Both transactions were initiated by Kissane near Lake Central High School while school was in session.

Kissane was arrested on Oct. 5 on the charges, according to the release.

The Schererville Police Department’s Special Operations Task Force handled the investigation and filed the charges.
