Man charged with beating 9-year-old

Battery charges have been filed in Lake Superior Court against a Hammond man charged with beating a 9-year-old girl.

Police were called Saturday to a home in the 200 block of 169th Street, where an officer noticed the girl had visible marks. The girl said she was beaten with fists, a belt and a hanger because she lost money she had received for her birthday.

Alex Thomas Vasquez, 31, faces a maximum eight-year sentence on the most serious of the felony counts.

The girl’s mother told police she was sitting in the enclosed front porch listening to music when she felt a commotion from inside the house. She told officers she saw Vasquez strike the girl with a belt at least six times. The girl had open wounds on her head, biceps and thigh, several scratches and swelling to her legs and arms.

The resident told police that between Sept. 30 and Saturday someone pried open the apartment door, stole a 55-inch flat-screen TV from the living room and rummaged through miscellaneous paperwork in his bedroom.
