Three people have been charged with beating a 9-year-old girl whose body showed signs of scars from old wounds.
Felisha Wynn, 27, of 5057 W. 20th Ave., Gary; her boyfriend, Travis Eral Evans, 22, of 377 Clark Road, Gary; and her brother, Victure Randall Wynn, 40, of 2119 Purdue, Gary, were charged in Lake Superior Court with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, neglect resulting in bodily injury and battery resulting in injury.
A relative of the girl gave a statement to police that she witnessed the girl being hit 15 times with a paddle and extension cord for not doing her school work. The girl was bleeding after the attack. The relative also told police the 9-year-old was hit after eating one of her mother’s muffins and that she had been “whooped” with a black hanger on her bare buttocks.
Court records indicate the girl appeared to be afraid to talk about what happened and initially told police the injuries on her body were just big mosquito bites. In a subsequent interview, the girl said her mother had told her to lie about the injuries and recounted being struck with an extension cord and paddle and had handcuffs on her feet. Her mother also poured hot sauce on her genital area, the probable cause affidavit states.
Investigators documented numerous scars on the girl’s buttocks, and cord or loop-shaped marks on her arms, legs and torso, She had several round scar marks on her arms and legs and some healing wounds, possible from burns, on her buttocks. Investigators estimated the girl had 75 or more patterned scars covering her body, according to court records.
Child Protective Services received an anonymous call in early June that the girl had been dropped off at her grandmother’s home in Gary and appeared to have several non-accidental injuries. The grandmother told police her daughter had asked if the child could spend the summer with her and she agreed.
The girl had been living with her family at the Willows Apartments, 435 Clark Road, Gary. Police took custody of three children and put them in foster care. The 9-year-old is living with her grandmother.
The charges are punishable by a maximum 20-year sentence.
