Man found dead in Gary may have shot himself accidentally

GARY — Investigators believe a Tolleston man found dead at a friend’s basement early Tuesday shot himself accidentally. Dorian Johnson, who turned 21 years old on Oct. 10, was found dead at 1741 Hayes St. about 3:40 a.m., Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Police arrested two residents of the house and questioned them extensively about the incident. Their stories coincide with other evidence that Johnson was playing with his brother’s gun when he was shot.

The witnesses were expected to be released and no charges are anticipated, police said. Investigators didn’t have a home address for Johnson until his brother called police to report his handgun was missing.

Johnson lived on Garfield Street, just blocks from the home where he died.

An autopsy will be performed on Wednesday, King said. Lake County coroner spokeswoman Jessica Metros “could not confirm or deny” a shooting victim, saying only a team of investigators was sent to the house on Hayes Street. She said the matter was pending.

Detective Cpl. Michael Barnes is investigating the shooting. Anyone with details can call him at 881-7434.
