Cedar Lake loses another police chief

CEDAR LAKE — Cedar Lake has its second new police chief in less than a year.
The Cedar Lake Town Council on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Police Chief Randall Mayersky. A letter of resignation also was accepted by the Town Council but not made public.
Mayerksy returned to the merit rank of lieutenant within the town’s police department, Town Council President Randell Niemeyer said Wednesday.
“I wouldn’t say it was expected but it was not a surprise,” Niemeyer said of the resignation.
The Town Council appointed a former town councilman, Deputy Chief Jerry Smith, as interim chief.
Mayersky was appointed chief in December, replacing former Chief Roger A. Patz on the recommendation of the Metropolitan Police Commission. Town Council members Ralph Miller and Patricia Casassa had seats on the commission. Smith was appointed deputy chief by the Town Council in February on Mayersky’s recommendation.
Mayersky’s resignation comes about one month after the resignation of Police Commission Chairman Chuck Kouter, according to Ian Nicolini, town administrator.
Niemeyer said he does not know which direction the council will take regarding its top cop.
“We’re going to take our time and make sure we do what is in the best interest of the town,” Niemeyer said.
