GARY

Warrant issued in home-alone case

Larry Ward, 25, has been charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent after police found his girlfriend’s two children home alone at her apartment Aug. 11.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Ward, of Dolton, Ill., who was released after being arrested at 578 Van Buren St. when he returned to the apartment Aug. 11. At the apartment, he met Gary officers and a maintenance man who found a 5-year-old and 1-year-old there alone.

The younger boy fell out of the apartment’s third-story window earlier this year while his mother slept. He suffered minor injuries. The mother was not charged in that incident.

Ward claimed he went to get food for the children because there was none at the home and the stove didn’t work, the probable cause affidavit states.

But the maintenance man found food and discovered the stove worked, court records state.

Ward told Detective Jennifer Powell he went to buy marijuana, but canceled his purchase when he saw police.
