Man sentenced in strangulation case

Updated: December 4, 2012 6:08AM

Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. sentenced a 58-year-old Gary man to 24 months for strangulation.

Joseph Jesse Murray was given good-time credit for the 104 days he spent in Lake County Jail, and the judge suspended the remaining 522 days of his sentence, which will be served on probation.

Murray admitted he became angry with a woman during a verbal argument on May 19 at a residence in the 1500 block of Hayes Street in Gary, and put his hands around her throat and applied pressure, making it difficult for her to breathe.

Murray had faced two to eight years on the original criminal confinement charge, which was dismissed along with three other felony counts and three misdemeanor battery charges. Prosecutors also agreed not to file an habitual offender enhancement in the case.
