Man accused of battering pregnant girlfriend

An East Chicago man has been charged with battery resulting in injury to a pregnant woman and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Linell O. Richardson, 26, is charged with assaulting his girlfriend early on Oct. 26. The woman, who is more than six months pregnant, told police she was in bed asleep at Richardson’s residence in the 3900 block of Deal Street when he came home, punched her in the face and accused her of being on the phone with another guy for 13 hours, the probable cause affidavit states.
The woman said Richardson appeared to be intoxicated as he continued to strike her in the face, shoulder and abdomen.
The woman told police she ran from the residence and called a friend, who took her to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago for treatment of a blackened right eye, a broken right eye orbital and bruises to her back, chest and left shoulder. The woman began experiencing contractions and went to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus, where she remained hospitalized as of Wednesday, the probable cause affidavit states.
The woman told police Richardson is the father of her unborn child.
The charges are punishable by two to eight years.
