Teen shot walking in Black Oak
A Black Oak teen was shot in the side Monday night as he and his younger brother walked near basketball courts in their neighborhood.
Daryl Hemminger, 16, was being treated at Community Hospital in Munster when Patrolman Mark Birkett went to take a report about the shooting, which occurred near 29th Avenue and Burr Street about 7:45 p.m.
The victim’s mother drove him to the hospital after she found him near the gas station with his 9-year-old brother.
The younger boy said two Hispanic males pulled up in a car and someone pointed a gun out a window. Hemminger pushed his younger brother behind him as the gun discharged.
Witnesses said the suspects were driving a black Jeep with big rims, gray stripes and ground effects.
Detective Lorenzo Davis is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call 881-4738.
Man found asleep in stolen truck
Shaun L. Thedford, 43, of 4814 Pennsylvania St., has been charged with burglary, auto theft and theft, for allegedly breaking into a neighbor’s garage and taking the man’s truck and other items.
Thedford was arrested shortly after the Oct. 27 break-in when a reserve officer Nate Harris saw him sleeping in the victim’s stolen truck.
Thedford admitted to Detective Pete Baum that he had the victim’s air compressor and lawn mower and told Baum where he could recover those items, which were returned to the owner.
