LAKE COUNTY

Offender didn’t register again

Convicted pedophile Kenneth Paul Rhone III was sentenced to six years in prison for failure to register as a sex or violent offender.

Rhone, 29, of Gary, also has a prior conviction for failure to register in July 2011, for which he was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Rhone admitted between October 2011 and July 2012, he either provided addresses in Gary that were determined to be fictitious or failed to register at all as of July 9.

The registration requirement is a result of Rhone’s 2006 conviction to a sex crime. He was sentenced in that case to eight years, with five years executed and three years suspended and served on probation. Ultimately, his probation was revoked and he was sentenced to the remaining three years in prison.

East Chicago

Two teens charged in armed robbery

Two East Chicago men have been charged in Lake Superior Court with armed robbery in Hammond in which two game systems were stolen.

Robert Lee Jones, 18, and Mark Anthony Young, 19, were arrested near State Line Avenue and Russell Street in Hammond in a red Jeep Cherokee that a witness identified as being near the scene of the robbery. Inside in plain view were the stolen items – a Wii console and a black Xbox, along with a second Wii console. The equipment had wires hanging from it.

The victim told police she was returning to her apartment late Sunday morning in the 6000 block of Hohman Avenue when one man rushed around the corner from the laundry room and pushed her into the apartment. Two other men joined the first man. One of the men, later identified as Jones, pulled out a handgun and threatened to shoot her if she screamed. The man demanded money, and she said she didn’t have anything. Another man, later identified as Young, asked her where her purse was. Jones racked a round and pointed the gun at her, and the third man said, “Don’t shoot her,” the probable cause affidavit states.

The gunman went into her son’s bedroom and took electronics while Young took a second Wii console from the woman’s bedroom, then grabbed her cell phone. The third man gave the woman’s phone back to her.

A witness told police he saw two men carrying what looked electronics before they took off in the Jeep, which was parked near the woman’s apartment.

The charge is punishable by six to 20 years.
