GARY — As he arrived at The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus, Michael T. Williams, 42, who was covered in blood, told Patrolman Donald Perryman, “I’m OK, I can walk. Help him,” the police report states.
In the back of the minivan, Darryl R. Jordan, 45, was slumped against the sliding passenger door. He was rushed to surgery and pronounced dead about 8 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, the Lake County coroner said.
Williams said they were driving on Chase Street near 19th Avenue about 4:45 a.m. when they were shot. Williams was struck in the right arm.
Police received information about two gunshot victims on their way to the hospital, then met Williams as he and his friend arrived.
Both Williams and the van were bloody, and the Gary crime scene detectives arrived to process any evidence they found in and on the minivan.
Both victims live on the west side of the city.
Jordan is the 34th homicide victim of the year, one more than the city recorded at this time in 2011.
Detective James Bond is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call him at 881-4751.
