Griffith man charged with shooting cousin

A Griffith man has been charged in Lake Superior Court with attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon in a June 2 shooting that wounded his cousin.
Laterrian Jordan Terrell Hutton, 21, of the 100 block of West 35th Court, is charged with shooting Michael Hutton Jr. about 1:30 a.m. June 2 at Hutton’s apartment in the 800 block of East 35th Avenue, Griffith.
The victim told police he, his cousin and others had eaten and had drinks at the victim’s apartment. At about 11 p.m., Michael Hutton, Laterrian Hutton and another man left to meet Laterrian’s father in East Chicago. Michael Hutton told police he had a dispute with Laterrian and put him out of his car near Calumet and Chicago avenues in East Chicago and then drove home. At about 1 a.m., Laterrian had demanded “his stuff,” referring to items left in the victim’s car. Michael Hutton told police he had shut the door and told his cousin he was going to put on some sweat pants when at least six shots were fired through the door.
Michael Hutton suffered gunshot wounds to the back, which struck major blood vessels, his liver and intestines.
The most serious of the charges is punishable by a maximum 50-year sentence.
