Man charged in Nov. 15 EC shooting

An East Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder, attempted battery and four counts of criminal recklessness stemming from a Nov. 15 incident in which more than a dozen shots were fired at an occupied apartment building.

Gary Deonte Walton, 25, of the 3700 block of Guthrie Street, is charged with shooting at a man as he was leaving through the front door of his apartment at about 10 p.m. Nov. 15 in the 3700 block of Deodar Street, East Chicago.

The man told police he was going down the stairs in front of his residence when he saw two men dressed in black clothing and recognized one of them as Walton. Both men opened fire on him with handguns, causing the man to hit the ground until he was able to get up and run inside.

Police noted 13 to 14 bullet holes in the apartments and found bullets that penetrated interior walls in the victim’s unit and others. Police recovered at least 10 spent shell casings on the ground and some more in the middle of the street.

The most serious of the charges is punishable by a sentence of 20 to 50 years.
