Man robbed two store clerks
Armed robbery and theft charges have been filed in Lake Superior Court against a Chicago man who authorities said robbed one store clerk at knifepoint and stole cash during a “quick change” scam.
Vernon Alexander Valentine, 50, of 8016 Eberhart Ave., is accused of robbing a Target employee Oct. 13 after displaying a knife and ordering the woman to make change for him for increasingly larger bills. “You will do what I tell you to,” the clerk told police Valentine instructed her after she became confused and flustered as he handed her various currency and requested a $50 and then a $100 bill. He produced the knife from his coat sleeve.
Valentine also is charged with stealing about $180 on Oct. 31 at Victoria’s Secret at Westfield Southlake mall during a similar transaction. Valentine eventually grabbed a stack of money from the clerk’s hand as she was counting $20s to make change for a $100 bill. The woman alerted her supervisor, who contacted security officers. Valentine was arrested.
On Nov. 4, Valentine was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart after complaining of chest pains. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, but left with a chest monitor valued at $1,000 still attached to his body.
The most serious of the charges is punishable by a sentence of six to 20 years.
