Criminal charges were filed Thursday against a homeless man accused of stabbing a man Monday inside a washroom at the East Chicago South Shore Passenger Station. The attacker has not yet been taken into custody.

Jawaun Dontell Woods, 24, of Gary, was charged by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office with attempted murder, attempted murder while committing a robbery, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and carjacking, according to Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Police.

Woods was not in police custody as of Thursday night and is considered armed and dangerous. The silver 2005 Honda Accord with the Illinois license plate number H713340 taken by Woods has not been recovered.

The victim had parked his car at 5:42 p.m. Monday, and went to use the station’s washroom while waiting for his wife to leave the train. Woods followed, police said, and cut the victim’s throat with a knife and stabbed him in the back as he tried to escape.

Within 40 minutes after the assault, the attacker drove the victim’s car to a nearby Lansing, Ill., Wal-Mart, and used the victim’s stolen credit card. Video from the store helped to identify Woods, and the victim was later able to identify Woods as his attacker from a photo lineup, police said.
