GARY — Residents can learn more about new trash collection services at a public forum 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 401 Broadway.
Representatives from Waste Management of Indiana LLC will be joined by Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Gary Sanitary District Director Dan Vicari.
In July, the GSD board of directors awarded a five-year contract to Waste Management. The company won the contract over the city’s current provider, Republic Services.
Waste Management submitted a $23.3 million bid, but its spokesman Kevin Boyce said the final figure will be lower because recyclables and yard waste will be collected by the city. Its landfill is in Monticello.
Waste Management will begin collecting trash Jan. 2.
Waste Management will begin providing each household with a 95-gallon green cart for waste collection on Jan. 7.
Carts should be used immediately upon delivery. The cart is for waste materials that cannot be recycled and its contents should not exceed 200 pounds. The carts should be placed at the curb or alley no later than 6 a.m. on collection day and should be removed no later than the evening of the collection day.
Waste Management will not collect solid or liquid hazardous wastes, including items such as paint, pesticides, petroleum derivatives such as motor oil and solvents, and explosive items.
The company will collect one bulk item per week at no additional charge. Bulk items, such as furniture, should be placed at the curb or alley on regular trash collection days.
