DYER — A train crashed into a car around noon Thursday at 77th Avenue and Calumet Avenue injuring the only occupant of the car, Albert Matthews, 66, of Dyer.
Matthews drove his Chrysler PT Cruiser across the tracks when it was hit by a northbound CSX freight train, according to Lake County Police spokeswoman Patti Van Til. The car was pushed about 60 feet down the tracks before coming to rest in a ditch, she said.
No crossing gates are used at the intersection. However, the lights were flashing and the engineer sounded the train’s horn to warn traffic, Van Til said.
Matthews was airlifted by a Medivac helicopter to Christ Hospital in Oaklawn, Ill. A report on his condition was not released by the hospital.
