Superstorm helpers honored by city
Three members of Crown Point Fire Rescue who participated in the East Coast recovery in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy were honored as the city’s Employees of the Month for December.
Firefighter/paramedics Mark Baumgardner Jr., Erik Schmidtt and John Sarver were among the 15 volunteers sent out in the first deployment of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 1 Task Force response team. The team arrived in Atlantic City Oct. 29 along with the storm. They were the first out of state response team to arrive in New Jersey, according to Baumgardner.
Mayor David Uran presented the award to the trio at Monday’s City Council meeting. The three then shared photographs from their experience.

Holidays activities kick off Dec. 11
The Twelve Days of Christmas will kick off Dec. 11 at the Cedar Lake Clubhouse, 9800 W. 129th Ave.
Create greeting cards for local soldiers Dec. 11, decorate gift card containers Dec. 12, decorate cookies Dec. 13 and bring your pet in for a picture with Santa Claus Dec. 14. Remember to bring your own camera. All events take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Come to the clubhouse Dec. 16 for a holiday movie, hot chocolate and popcorn; create with candy canes Dec. 17, make a duct tape gingerbread house Dec. 18, decorate a Christmas stocking Dec. 19, make a Christmas tree craft Dec. 20 and get your picture taken with the Grinch Dec. 21. All events take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Participate in a business scavenger hunt hosted by the Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce Dec. 22.

See Frosty at Yuletide Open House
Frosty the Snowman will be spreading Christmas cheer Dec. 15 during the Lowell Downtown Merchants Association annual Yuletide Open House.
Frosty will be joined by Mr. Yuletide to pass out candy canes and pose for pictures along from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Commercial Avenue in the historic downtown.
Festivities include outdoor holiday music, refreshments in many of the downtown shops and last minute Christmas specials.
