GARY — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a freight train around 2:18 p.m. Saturday near West 9th Place between Chase Street and Clark Road.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Marques Maurice Rummage, 29, of Gary.
Gary police responded after a Norfolk Southern engineer reported that the train hit a pedestrian near 900 Wallace Street. According to police reports, the engineer said the train was headed east when he observed a man walking east in the middle of the tracks. The engineer sounded the train’s horn and applied the brakes but could not keep from striking the man.
