GARY — A woman in Gary faces 15 felony and 16 misdemeanor charges after an investigation with the Indiana State Police found she was operating unauthorized adoption websites.
Lynn Ellis, 42, of Gary was advertising two adoption services online, Tinkerbell Adoption Referral and The Pregnancy Choices. People throughout the country accessed the website and paid a fee to begin the adoption process. No adoption was ever concluded after paying.
The investigation, conducted by 1st Sgt. Jeffery Matson, also found that Ellis is not licensed in Indiana to facilitate adoptions. State law requires a license to either be involved or facilitate an adoption.
Ellis faces charges of one count of profiting from adoption and 14 counts of fraud, both Class D felonies. She also faces two counts of unauthorized adoption advertising and 14 counts of unauthorized adoption facilitation, both Class A misdemeanors.
