Nine-Span Bridge to close for demolition, reconstruction

Commuters clogging Indianapolis Boulevard on their way from communities south of East Chicago will have to find a new way to make it to the South Shore commuter train station in East Chicago for what may be the rest of 2013.
The Indiana Department of Transportation will close the Nine-Span Bridge that separates Hammond and East Chicago on Indianapolis Boulevard beginning Monday, Jan. 14
The old structure, which spans the IHB rail yard on State Road 152, will be demolished and a replacement will be built, according to a press released from INDOT. The new bridge is expected to open by the end of 2013.
Recommended detours from INDOT include moving northbound traffic south on Indianapolis Boulevard east on Interstate 80/94, north on Cline Avenue and west on U.S. 20 (Michigan Street). Southbound traffic will travel east on Michigan Street, south on Cline, west on Interstate 80/94, and north on Indianapolis.
