Former Lake County Coroner Thomas Philpot will find out on Feb. 21 his sentence on federal mail fraud and theft charges, six months after a jury convicted him on the counts.
The sentencing date was announced Monday by the U.S. District Court in Hammond.
Philpot was found guilty of paying himself about $24,000 while he was the Lake County clerk from a special state fund used to reimburse county employees who helped collect child support payments.
State law prohibits elected officials from increasing their salary without approval from the fiscal body, and jurors agreed with federal attorneys that the Lake County Council never gave Philpot that permission.
Although the trial wrapped up in August, a sentencing hearing had not been set until now. Philpot has filed motions for acquittal and a new trial that have not been ruled on yet.
