Residents robbed by scam artists
Police are warning residents of scam artists who approach homeowners and distract them while an accomplice removes valuables.
Homeowners on Delaware Street told police Monday that a male Hispanic, weighing 250 to 300 pounds and wearing a gray coat, baseball cap and sunglasses, knocked on the door and introduced himself as a future neighbor and asked to come inside.
He convinced the resident to go to the rear of the home where he asked questions about neighboring homes, engaging the resident in conversation for several minutes.
Police said the suspect received a cellphone call and departed. Later, the resident found valuables missing from a bedroom. The resident told police another individual must have entered the home while the residents were distracted by the suspect.
Police said residents should ask for identification before allowing anyone into their home and to call police to when people are unable to provide identification or appear suspicious.
