County Councilman Dan Dernulc has thrown his hat in the ring for the Republican Party’s top spot in Lake County.

Dernulc, who announced his candidacy Friday night, will face party member Allan Katz for the chairman position. GOP Chairman Kim Krull has announced she won’t seek re-election.

Dernulc said, if elected, his main goals will be first to unite the party, then to seek out and give support to solid GOP candidates in Lake County.

“We all need to stick together as a party,” Dernulc said. “This position, should I get elected, is not going to be about me. I know (the GOP is) a tough, tough sell in North County, so it’s going to be about trying to work with people with good ideas.”

Dernulc, who held a fundraiser for his next run for Lake County Council at Rodney’s Sports Bar in Highland on Thursday night, said he has the support of the majority of the county’s Republican elected officials. Among those who he said have endorsed him are Cedar Lake Town Councilman Bob Carnahan, Crown Point Clerk-Treasurer Patti Olson, Munster Councilman Dave Nellans and Schererville Councilman Jerry Tippy.

“I have a lot of support, and my record on the Highland Town Council, Little Calumet River Basin Board and now the County Council is one of trying to bring people together,” he said. “I love this party, and I want us to be a party that shows we’re a viable alternative and make it something people want to be a part of.”

If elected, Dernulc said he plans to appoint Schererville resident Rebecca Holwerda as his vice chairman, state Representative Rick Niemeyer as secretary and Andy Qunell of Munster as treasurer.

Dernulc, of Highland, is a married father of four and a telecommunications company project manager.

The Lake County GOP will hold a caucus to elect its new chairman at 9 a.m. March 2 at St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church in Merrillville.
