A 32-year-old Munster man has been charged with battery by means of a deadly weapon and intimidation in which he pulled a sword on a woman who was attempting to get him to leave a Hammond residence.
Jason T. Smith, of the 7900 block of Harrison Street, is charged with injuring the caregiver of the 83-year-old homeowner, who had allowed Smith and his girlfriend to live in his basement in exchange for Smith performing some roofing work in the summertime. The man discovered Smith and his girlfriend had been smoking marijuana in the house, and when the caregiver told them the owner wanted the couple to leave, the girlfriend got into an argument with the caregiver, shoved the phone into the caregiver’s chest and slapped her across the face.
When the homeowner came downstairs, Smith pulled a samurai sword and pushed it toward the caregiver’s stomach while threatening her, the probable cause affidavit states.
The charges are punishable by a maximum eight-year sentence.
